I did my volunteer service August 2014-2015 in Malawi.
I was part of the German government program "weltwärts". My organization was Kolping Jugendgemeinschaftsdienste. When people asked me what I was doing in Malawi, I used to answer:

"I am working at a Primary School."
- "Oh, are you a teacher?"
"No, I am trying to teach."

LESSONS

Do you know how a bat sees the world?
A bat is almost blind at night. It sees with its ears, using sound!

How is it possible to hear using sound? What is sound?
Sound is sound waves, produced by a vibrating object.

  • Stick the bat on the board
Bats produce sound waves with their mouth or nose. Bats make rapid, high-pitched squeaks called “ultrasounds” (to high for persons to hear them).
  • Draw the sound waves produces by the bat with yellow chalk on the board.
  • Stick the fly on the board.
The sound waves spread – when they hit an object, they get reflected and are sent back to the bat.

  • Draw the reflected sound waves with red chalk on the board.
The bat listens to the echo and can tell what and where the object is. This is called echolocation.
